Adult Orthodontics: Your Options

Spread the love

Are you concerned with the alignment of your teeth, or how straight they are (or aren’t)? If your answer is “YES” then you may wish to pursue a treatment plan with adult orthodontics. Even if fixing the alignment of your teeth for cosmetic purposes is not a top priority for you, there are many circumstances in which this treatment can actually benefit the health and wellbeing of your mouth in the long run as well. In fact, an estimated 50-75% of people could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Let’s take a look at what the most common adult orthodontics options are, and what differentiates them, as well as how Falcon Dental can help.

Traditional Braces

When most people think of orthodontics, the first thing that comes to mind is traditional metal braces. These are comprised of brackets placed directly onto the teeth that are then threaded with metal wires. The wires are held in place by rubber bands and the entire system gradually shifts the placement of the teeth by applying a constant pressure or force in whatever direction they need to move.

Guidance

This approach to adult orthodontics typically involves more consistent involvement and guidance from your dentist or orthodontist. Making adjustments to traditional braces is, quite literally, more hands-on.

Accountability

Because your dentist or orthodontist has more involvement with traditional braces, there is also more accountability. Your treatment provider can help to ensure that you are staying on track and that you are caring for your teeth and your braces properly.

Customizable Appearance

Traditional braces can have a customizable appearance by swapping out the colored rubber bands that hold the wires onto the brackets. This can make them more fun and personal.

Clear Alignment Braces

Another approach to adult orthodontics is clear alignment braces or aligners. This involves a series or set of clear trays or retainers that are removable as opposed to being semi-permanently fixed in the mouth. Ultimately, they align teeth with the same tactic of applying constant pressure or force to shift them in the direction they need to go.

Self-Managed

With this approach to adult orthodontics, the treatment is more self-managed. Once you have your set or series of aligners, you are responsible for putting them and taking them out according to your treatment plan.

Convenience

Many individuals find that clear alignment braces or aligners are more convenient, as you can take them out of your mouth as needed, and you have a series to transition through instead of needing to go to the dentist or orthodontist every time an adjustment is needed.

Transparency

Perhaps one of the most notable perks with clear alignment braces or aligners is that they are fairly transparent. This allows for a more discreet treatment method, and what most individuals consider to be a more appealing appearance throughout the treatment process.
