Did you know that the fear of going to the dentist is actually called Dentaphobia? It’s a real fear that affects 36% of people in the United States.

Fearing the dentist may not affect you, but for some, it can seem like a nightmare.

And what happens when we have fear or anxiety over something? We don’t do that specific thing!

People who have fear and anxiety over going to the dentist will avoid it the same way people who have a fear of heights avoid a roller coaster ride!

However, not going on a roller coaster has a much less effect on your health than the dentist. Dental hygiene is important and for those who avoid the dentist at all costs are at risk for problems down the line.

It’s recommended that you see the dentist 2 times a year and at least once a year for a comprehensive evaluation and cleaning. For some, it could take years and they will even stay in pain from a cavity or other dental problem because of their fear.

If you are like the millions of people who struggle with this fear here are some helpful tips for conquering dental fear.

Tip 1: Find The Right Dentist

Here at Falcon Dental, we want to help ease the anxiety and fear of going to the dentist. We want to ensure that you get the dental assistance you need without having to panic.

Tip 2: Ask Questions

Dr. Kate Murphy, the newest member of the team along with the rest of our team are always there to lend a helping hand and listening ear to those who are fearful.

If you are worried about a procedure, what the process of the cleaning is, why you are experiencing pain in a certain area, or anything else, feel free to ask and we will be happy to explain the process every step of the way so you can be prepared!

You can even tell us to give you a minute to relax and have a quick break! We are here to help you and give you whatever you need to get through the appointment with the least amount of anxiety as possible!

Tip 3: Get Distracted

If the noises and sounds of the dental tools are what trigger your anxiety, bring some headphones and listen to music or a podcast to distract you!

It will keep your mind occupied while the dentist completes their job.

Tip 4: Bring A Buddy

Bringing a friend or family member to help you through the door is a great way to start conquering your dental fear!

They can help you take those crucial first steps and even drive you to and from the appointment to make sure you get there without heightening your anxiety.

Tip 5: Try Meditation & Breathing Techniques

Your anxiety might trigger a panic attack, and cause heart palpitations, excessive sweating, dizziness, and more.

To calm those symptoms practice simple breathing techniques or meditation to calm your mind and body.

You can do this as much as you want and give yourself a minute to relax and continue moving forward with the appointment.
