Dental Implant Restorations: What You Should Know

Blog 3

If you’re looking for a way to improve your smile after losing teeth, dental implant restorations can help!

Losing teeth can cause more than just issues with your smile. Your ability to chew food, your gum and mouth health, and your self-esteem can all be affected by a missing tooth or teeth.

Don’t hide behind a toothless smile or choose foods that are easy to chew; restore your mouth health and regain your confidence with dental implant restorations!

What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an anchor, or abutment,  that mimics the roots of a tooth. The anchor is made of titanium and looks like a screw that a restoration piece will be attached to later on.

The importance of dental implants is to allow the mouth and gum structure to stay as it would if a natural tooth and root would still be there.

Why is that important? When you lose teeth the structure of your mouth and facial shape changes due to bone recession in the jaw line. Your mouth will look “sunken” and your facial structures will become more sallow if there is nothing to hold it in place.

What Is A Dental Implant Restoration?

This is the next step in the implant process. Dental implant restorations are the tooth-like replacements used to replace missing teeth, or dentures that are attached to the initial implant, or anchor.

Depending on how many teeth have been lost will determine the type of restoration you’ll receive. This will be reviewed and assessed by your dentist who will help you choose the best form of action for restoring your smile and mouth health!

Crown Restoration

A crown restoration is a tooth replacement that looks to match your natural teeth and is typically made of porcelain so it is strong and able to cut through the toughest foods.

This is a great option if you have one or more missing teeth throughout your mouth and your remaining natural teeth are healthy and strong.

Denture Restoration

If you have more than a few missing teeth, unhealthy teeth, or no teeth at all, your dentist may suggest a denture style of implant restoration.

This involves placing the anchors in 4 or 6 areas of the upper and lower jaws and then attaching permanent dentures to those anchor points.

The dentures will look like natural teeth and you won’t have to worry about removing them or adding denture glue to hold them in place.

The Implant And Restoration Process

Dental implant restorations are no quick fix and require several steps to achieve a permanent and restored smile.

During the consultation, your dentist will determine if you have a healthy jaw and good bone density to have a dental implant procedure and then go over your options for restoration.

Once you have decided on the type of restoration you will receive, the first step is attaching the implants.

The implants will be surgically implanted into your gums. And then you will need to allow 4-6 months to heal and allow the anchor to hold and attach properly.

Once you are healed the restoration piece will be added as the tooth or permanent denture.

Your implant process is then completed and your healthily, beautiful smile is restored.
