Dental Implants: Aftercare

Spread the love

Are you considering pursuing a dental procedure like dental implants? If you have concerns about your dental health or the appearance of your teeth, you may have already spent some time looking into a solution such as permanent dental implants. This solution is more preferable to a temporary solution such as dentures for many people. There are some considerations that need to made prior to committing to this procedure, however, including what dental implant aftercare looks like. Let’s take a look at some notable aftercare instructions and how to go about pursuing dental implants at Falcon Dental!

Managing Swelling

After an extensive procedure such as dental implants, some swelling is to be expected. After all, your mouth undergoes a fair amount of trauma during the implantation process. Swelling is your body’s natural response to this in an effort to protect from further damage and to heal. Typically, there is a noticeable improvement in swelling within a few days of your procedure. In order to help manage this swelling, an anti-inflammatory can be taken. In addition, applying ice to the affected area can be beneficial.

Managing Pain

Another expectation with a procedure like dental implants is for some pain and discomfort to occur. You will need some time to adjust to the implants, and this can cause pain within your mouth and jaw. Over-the-counter pain medicine can be taken, and on occasion, prescription pain meds can be an option as well. If you become concerned with any pain or discomfort, the team at Falcon Dental is always here to help.

Eating & Drinking

After a dental implant procedure, it is essential to limit your bite pressure while your mouth becomes accustomed to your new additions. There will be heightened sensitivity in your mouth, and avoiding crunchy, hot, and spicy foods is advised. Typically, after a few days to a week, you can begin to introduce these foods back into your diet, however, we recommend avoiding biting into hard or tough foods until your implants have completely healed.

Proper Hygiene

One very important aspect to dental implant aftercare is keeping up with proper oral hygiene. As with any procedure, there is always the chance of infection with dental implants. If you neglect brushing and flossing your teeth in the long run, you can end up with gum disease just as you would with entirely natural teeth. In addition, in the days following your procedure, you may be advised to rinse with a warm saltwater solution or to clean the area with a suggested solution and a Q-tip. The team at Falcon Dental will instruct you on how to best keep your mouth healthy and clean, and we are always on hand to answer any questions you may have.
