Same Day Crowns: What You Should Know
Every year millions of people across the United States go in for a dental procedure that requires them to get a dental crown placed.
The reason can be a chipped or cracked tooth, a root canal, tooth decay, and more.
Dental crowns are caps placed over an existing tooth that mimics the look of that tooth. It is a permanent cap and helps to restore function and look!
Dental Crowns have been thought to have been used for thousands of years but the modern-day crowns we know and use came about in the early 1900s.
But did you know that there is a more advanced way that allows you to leave the dentist with a permanent crown on the same day?
That’s right! They are called “Same Day Crowns”, and they are the latest advancement in dental crown procedures!
What Are Same Day Crowns?
Same Day Crowns are pretty self-explanatory but it’s a procedure that allows you to leave the dental office the same day with a permanent crown, or dental cap.
Traditional crowns typically require 2-3 weeks to be created in a lab and that causes you to have to come back to get the permanent crown placed on the tooth.
When you receive a procedure that needs to have a crown placed, you get a mold created of that tooth and then it is sent to the lab to be created. Your dentist will place a temporary crown during that waiting period and once the permanent crown is finished, you’ll go back in to have it placed.
With the technology of Same Day Crowns, you eliminate the waiting game and receive it all in the same day.

How Are Same Day Crowns Made?
Same Day Crowns are created in-house with a special machine that uses 3D photos of your tooth and mouth to create the crown.
It looks identical and can also match the coloring of your tooth as well.
Before the procedure starts your dentist will take the photos needed to recreate your tooth, and while they are working on your root canal, chipped tooth or whatever procedure needs to have a crown, they will start the machine to start creating it!
Same Day Crowns are made with dental-grade porcelain, ceramic, or other sturdy materials that make them comparable in strength to traditional crowns!
Are Same Day Crowns Expensive?
The great thing about Same Day Crowns is that it is still a crown; some of the costs can be covered by dental insurance! It will be sent to insurance by your dentist just like they would a traditional crown.
It is comparable in price to a traditional crown replacement and in some cases is actually more affordable since you eliminate one visit entirely!
If your dentist has the technology to do so, they will most likely even recommend this over a traditional crown since it is more convenient and cost-effective!
Who Is A Good Candidate For Same Day Crowns?
Knowing if you are a good candidate for a Same Day Crown all comes down to the professional decision of your dentist.
When a Same Day Crown is placed it saves more of the tooth than a traditional crown. However, if there is not much tooth to save it there are tooth issues below the gum line and your procedure is more in-depth, a traditional crown might be needed.
It all depends on what is best for you, your oral health, and your smile!
