What is cosmetic dentistry? Falcon Dental Care – Falcon, CO. Traditional dentistry concentrates on oral hygiene and preventing, diagnosing, and managing oral disease. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the teeth, mouth, and smile.

In other words, general dental practices address dental problems that require necessary treatment, whereas cosmetic dentistry provides elective treatments or services.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is not recognized as a dental specialty, and any dentist can claim to be a cosmetic dentist, regardless of experience and skill.

Founded in 1984 by Dr. Jack Kammer and Dr. Jeff Morely, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry developed a standard for cosmetic dentistry and established an organization committed to accountable esthetics.

Since its founding, the AACD has become the world’s largest and most trusted cosmetic dentistry organization with over 6,000 dental professionals, laboratory technicians, educators, and researchers from 70 countries worldwide.

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve the smile. Staining or yellowing the teeth can come from medications, smoking, age, wine, coffee, etc. Patients have the option to have their teeth bleached with in-office products in their dentist’s office, or use a mold and gels from the dentist to bleach teeth at home.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the teeth’ front surface. They are often used for patients with chipped teeth, a gap between teeth, or misshaped teeth.

Veneers are either made of porcelain or composite resin material. Your dentist will help you choose the material that is best for you.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is used to repair decayed, chipped, cracked, or misshapen teeth and an alternative to/replacement for silver fillings.

Bonding is also used to close the large spaces between teeth, change the teeth’ shape, or make teeth appear longer. In some cases, bonding is used in place of metallic fillings to protect the exposed root of a tooth with receded gums.

Dental Crown

A dental crown, also known as a cap, replaces a decayed or damaged tooth above the gum line. The crown restores the tooth’s appearance, size, durability, and appearance.

Crowns are made from either metal, porcelain-fused metal, resin, or ceramic and keep a fragile tooth from breaking. They also hold a cracked tooth together and can be used cosmetically to cover misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Outlays are indirect fillings made from gold, porcelain, or composite materials. They are made in a dental laboratory to fill decayed or damaged teeth and are a single, solid piece that fits the size and shape of the cavity.

An “inlay” is when the material is bonded within the center of a tooth where an “onlay” is when the filling includes one or more tooth points or covers the biting surface. An alternative to a crown, Inlays, and Olays are made to preserve as much healthy tooth as possible.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a “surgical component that interfaces with the jaw or skull’s bone to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis, or to act as an orthodontic anchor“.

Over time dental implants become part of the jaw, so they look and feel like natural teeth. They don’t move or slip around while you eat or talk.

Other Options

Other options are considered cosmetic dentistry. Some of these include:

  1. Bridge– Crowns for the teeth on either side of a gap with false teeth in between.
  2. Dentures– removable replacement for missing teeth.
  3. Dental braces- used to straighten crooked or misaligned teeth by applying continuous pressure over time to move teeth in a specific direction.
